If you don't want to fly, you can take a boat to the gulf area and travel down south all the way to Malaysia or even Singapore.
If you want to go to Gili Island, you must fly to Bali, either from Kuala Lumpur, or Penang or Singapore. From Bali, you are able to take boat to Gili.
You could use the low cost airline www.airasia.com
For the island in Malaysia, on the east coast of the Peninsular - Perhentian, Lang Tengah, Redang, Gemia, Kapas, Tenggol, Tioman, etc, the boat service will be out from Nov to Feb as Monsoon season is near. There are still boat till almost end Oct.
For the island in Malaysia, on the west coast of the Peninsular - Langkawi, Pangkor, etc, will be easier as not affected by monsoon. Pangkor Island is an easy pick and better for budget than the rest, better beach than Langkawi and got cheap chalet. From Hatyai, you can take bus or train to cross the border to Malaysia Butterworth, from there, take a bus to Lumut, from there there is boat service to Pangkor Island.

we are thinking about the west coast of Malaysia as the weather has been very wet in Koh Samui and Phuket!!!
