Sydney to Cairns; first stop?

Hello guys,
Me and 3 friends will be travelling up the East Coast just after New Years (around the 2nd of January), I am a little worried about getting accomodation just by walking in, so I'm wondering what most peoples first stop is when making this trip.

I think Byron Bay is usually first stop, but Nelson Bay is also nice. Both are likely to be fairly crowded at that time of year because it's school holidays in NSW.

After Sydney next stop on the way up to Carins for me was Byron Bay, although I wish I'd stopped at Spot X and maybe Lennox head enroute. If you don't have much time go straight to Byron and spend more time exploring the smaller places the greyhound stops at in Queensland (Noosa, Agnes Waters (1770) & Magnetic Island (Via Townsville)).

There's loads of accomodation in Byron. I stayed in the Arts Factory lodge, very laid back, nothing like Base or Wake Up. They have camping too.

Enjoy.
