Hi fellow travellers,
Hi Martijn,
I was in Argentina Mar-Jun 2010. Something you have to be awared. If you are using lonely planet, the prices are all out, or double!!!
Hostels in most Patagonia little towns (even Buenos Aires) are plenty and easy to find, shared dorm (3 or 4 person) is ranging from 30-60Peso a night. Except Ushuaia! Prices in Ushuaia are much higher and good hostel is hard to find.
I personally do not think you will need camping gear.
Buses in Argentina got different tier, to me, the price is quite reasonable. An example, the 1st class (really like the flight 1st class), from Bariloche to Mendoza, with hot dinner provided, around 18hours, cost around 300Peso.
Keep in mind, Patagonia is wide. Buenos Aires to Ushuaia is closed to 3800KM. So, one place to another is always with long distance and normally a bus ride is easily took >10hours.
I am not sure where are you from. My personal opinion is if you don't have enough time, you can skip Mendoza (especially for Australian, Canadian, or anyone who came from wine country). I personally think it is a waste of time, nothing much in Mendoza, except you can get really cheap wine there.
Instead of Mendoza, Salta was a big surprise since you are heading to Iquazo Fall.
It is not just beautiful. It is not word to describe. Salta, Cachi, Cafayate (the wine here is stronger, tastier and more flavor than those in Mendoza), Purmamaca, Humahuaca, Iruya. All these places are hardly advertised, not as commercialize as Patagonia, but so nice to visit. I didn't got much detail before I go and spent too much time in Patagonia. I wish I could have spent more than 1 week in the north.
Car rental in Argentina is expensive, could easily cost upto USD50 a day.
Till then, enjoy and good luck.
Fui
Im a female traveling solo to Argentina in January for 18 days. I loved your comments and I would like to check if my plans are ok.
So the cities I chose :
Buenos Aires - 5 DAYS ( including Uruguay - Sacramento)
Bariloche - 4 days
El Calafate - JAN 4 days
Ushuaia - 5 days
Is the number of days in each city reasonalbe for what they offer?
THNAKS SOOO MUCH I JUST NEED TO BOOK THE FLIGHTS AFTER KNOWING THAT..
Martijn
4 weeks is very realistic, perfect for arg.
One condition, you will need one flight included, to avoid travel weariness on massive bus journeys. Though the buses are comfortable, too many will inevitably spoil your mood.
Since you don't seem to be hitting the pampas or rio chubut area, I suggest a flight from calafate to buenos Airies, or vice versa.
Cheap ones are available if booked in advance from aerolinas argentinas website. Good company, I would trust them.
Thisll give you time in each place, and youll still have some mammoth bus journeys on your hands.
Renting a car is a no go on this budget.
Camping would be good, but requires planning. I didn't bother, but then again it was mid winter when I was there.
Ps - buenos Airies is great, if you plan 3-4 days there, double it!
Huw
You can do loads of stuff in 4 four weeks in Argentina. Buenos Aires, Trelew, Ushuaia, Calafate, Mendoza, Salta and Iguazu can all be covered. This maybe a little rushed though but, hey, be ambitious!!
I would definatley say visit BA, Ushuaia, Calafate and Iguazu are the musts!!
Cecibastos,
Sorry, I was out in Thailand. Ya, I think your schedule is fine but not included the traveling time. Keep in mind Argentina is a very big country, if you are going to travel by bus for example, Ushuaia to Calafate, take 20 hours.
