I am planning to visit Thailand next year with my girlfriend. I was thinking of flying to Bangkok, spending a couple of nights there and then heading down towards Phuket. I would like to travel independently of travel agents. So any advice would be appreciated, specifically regarding methods of transport within Thailand! We would be in Thailand foir 14 - 17 nights.
Thailand has excellent transportation. You can easily purchase a plane ticket from local travel agencies in Bangkok and fly to Phuket. If you take a bus to Phuket it will be a long ride. You can take trains part of the way and then bus the rest of the way to Phuket. You will need a travel agency to purchase the plane tickets but you can simply purchase bus tickets from the bus station and train tickets from the train station.
In Bangkok transportation is well organized from the airport to popular areas in Bangkok. Buses are available, Airport Rail Link available plus meter taxis are available 24 hours a day. In the city there are local city buses, meter taxi cabs and the overhead rail service called the Skytrain. There is a subway that has connections with the Skytrain and with the new Rail Link.
Don't waste your entire holiday at Phuket! Phuket is probably the most expensive place to visit. See if you can fit in a visit to Chiang Mai so you can see some of the things that make Thailand unique. You can take a bus, plane or train to Chiang Mai. The sleeper train is popular for the ride to Chiang Mai. Leave Bangkok in the evening and arrive at Chiang Mai around 7 or 8 a.m. giving you a full day for sightseeing. The sleeper train will also save you from paying for another night in a hotel. Spend a final night or two in Bangkok so you can purchase last minute souvenirs and perhaps take in an evening dinner cruise. You can purchase tours through local Thai travel agencies. They will have a menu selection of popular tours you can take. Tour company will pick you up at your hotel and return you there at the end of the trip. You can obtain tours from travel agencies in Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and Bangkok quite easily. All of Thailand has warm weather 12 months a year. Even during the rainy season millions of tourist still visit that country.
You can book your own flights using the internet if you want, millions of travelers to Thailand do it themselves. You can book your own hotels if you want. If you need hotel recommendations mention a price range so someone can suggest a hotel. Wait until you get to Thailand to change any money to Thai baht. There are banks available to change your money 24 hours a day at the airport. Changing your money in Thailand will usually give you a better return than doing it in another country. You can also use debit and credit cards in Thai ATM's too.
A simple Google check will give you tons of info on "what to see and do" in Bangkok and Thailand in general.

Thailand caters very well for independent travelers and so you can turn up at the airport with nothing booked get a taxi to Khoa San Road Area and book into one of the many hotels. From here you have access to a great number independent travel agents who can assist you with booing bus, train and air travel to where ever your want, book you onto excursions and jungle treks, scuba diving and elephant riding. The possibilities really are endless.
However you can even do it completely independently and make your way to the train station and buy a ticket like the Thais would do. This will save you money as the travel agents obviously take commission. Also tour like jungle treks are just as easy to organize when you arrive at your destination so don't worry about getting everything booked when you arrive in Bangkok.
Take a lonely planet and pick you own route. With just over 2 weeks you will not be able to see everything but if you are looking to get some city time, a trip to the jungle and some beach time all within your trip I would do something like the following.
Bangkok 2/3 nights - gives you time to acclimatize and see some of the great cites this country has to offer
Trip to Kanchanuburi and the river Kwai/ Erawan Waterfalls 2/3 nights
Sleeper train bkk - Surat thani - Ko Phan Ngan 3/4 nights
Ferry to Ko Tao 3/4 nights (if you want to do a PADI scuba diving course here then at least 5nights)
Ferry to Chumphon and bus up to Bkk.
Depending on the time of year you travel will depend on the weather so check travel fish website for weather and if the east coast is wet when you are travelling just get the sleeper train to Trang instead and visit the islands there.
Of course this is just and ideas but have fun!
