You could try pan handling on a downtown street corner, should be good for survival money maybe $30 a day.
Which papers are you waiting for, if immigration arent you supposed to take care of the paper work before you get here?
As its illegal for employers to hire people for cash you wont get many bites from regular companies..
It is autumn and a lot of leaves are falling, maybe you could knock on doors to see if home owners want their leaves raked up..

Thanks for the suggestions. I am waiting for the work visa paperwork, as I came to Canada as a student. Unfortunately, international students are not allowed to work for 6 months after arrival which leaves me without a source of income. I am aware that hiring "under the table" is illegal but when you're backed up into a corner it doesn't seem that important. What can I say - winter is coming and I need to be able to keep up with my rent payments... :-)
