Sleeper train = 12+ hours, possibly with a bunch of partying drunks in the bunk next door.
Planes = a couple hours.
Ive never seen partying drunks on the train. There are Thai staff who make up the beds and serve meals etc, they are fantastic and friendly and would probably tuck you in for the night if you asked. You leave in the evening and arrive in the am. Its perfect.
Cheers people, the partying drunks dont sound too bad. Im travelling on my own so it sounds like an opportunity to meet people!!

Well Im not saying it doesn't happen, but both my trips were fine, maybe you were just unlucky, or from Dans point of view, lucky!

I have used the sleeper train to Chiang Mai a few times, I had no problem with noisy drunks.
If you plan on using the sleeper train get your tickets as soon as possible on arrival at Bangkok. Regular seats may be available even on day of departure but sleeper cars go fast, especially during high season.
For your stay in Bangkok you could use a hotel in the Sukhumvit Road area not far from Nana or Asoke Skytrain stops. In this area you have hotels in all price ranges, restaurants, nightlife, malls, street vendors, etc. There is a connection for the subway at the Asoke Skytrain stop. The subway can take you directly to Hualamphong train station.
On the train they do take orders for breakfast. Unless you like your eggs all runny and the bacon or sausage barely cooked - skip it!

Before I left for travels i booked two flights, one from Dublin to Bangkok an then another from Bangkok to Chaing Mai.
The flight to Chaing Mai was on Air Asia an cost less than 30pounds - I booked it for 1.5hrs after the time i was due to land
in Bangkok. I knew I was going back to Bangkok so decided it was cheap option to get up north.
I stayed on a place called Julies Guesthouse on my own an within 2days I had met loads of fellow travellers an booked a jungle trek with them, endedup travellin with 5 of those people for the next 3 months so worked out better than i could have wished.

If you have the money and get a cheap flight (like AirAsia as other post suggested) then obviously that's the quickest way. For me, I've been happy to take the overnight train a few times. This year I picked up the o'nite train from Ayutthaya (as I had not been here before) to Chiang Mai. As suggested, it is best to book as soon as you can, particularly during high season. I haven't encountered disrespectful (read drunk etc)travellers but that is always a possibility whether you travel on a plane, train, bus or ferry. I always book a bottom bunk in 2nd class aircon, you pay a little more but you get a bed with additional width. I also get a bunk in the middle of the carriage, away from the connecting doors and toilets. I'm a light sleeper so I use ear plugs. I eat prior to boarding and don't have breakfast until after I have checked in to my destination. And of course the o'nite fare is a transport/accom. combo. Up to you. Safe travels.
Ok got the sleeper train booked althogh its 2nd class no bed but reclining seat. Hope this is ok! Meals included so I wont starve haha. Bring on the adventure. Looking to get out of bangkok now Koh Sahn Road etc is starting to do my head in! Going further north from chang mai to Pai as ive had high recommendations of this place.
