Hi there
I did the same trip last year. However, I am a male. Australia is just as organized as it would be in the USA and Canada and probably safer then most American Cities. You'll be just fine. It is very easy to find transportation and greyhound Australia goes almost everywhere. Hostels are safe. As a woman, I would say Australia is one of the safest places to travel. Just don't do anything you wouldn't do at home.

Hi............
do not worry...there would be no problem to travel alone....i had the same trip few months ago.you are going to enjoy. Where you can learn to surf, partying in great cities, incredible beaches, off–roading on Fraser Island, sailing the Whitsundays, cattle stations, wrestling crocodiles , Aborigines, seeing The Great Barrier Reef and the stunning magnetic island.
Have fun..........
Hi
As a female you will be fine Oz is safe as long as you do things that you wouldnt do back home. Hostels are safe and of high standard. Tour companies run buses all thru OZ so it wont be hard to get on it. My suggestion is do a hop on hop off since you have 2 months to travel from syd to Cairns. So look thru the well known tour companies and may be shoot them an email asking pricing etc etc. I am form sydeny and if and if youneed anymore info let me know and I will try to source out information for you.
cheers and see you in sydney
I am doing a similar trip in April-June, but Cairns to Melbourne, hop on hop off. I am nervous too! You're going before me, so let me know how it goes!
Hi there
thank you for your helpful replies.
now i am really looking forward to it
@Smoothiee: any hotels or hostels you can recommend me? and nightclubs?
@Lubinski: yes sure, i will tell you how it goes only 3 months left
Hey,
as other said, being a woman and traveling oz is fine. I just did 10 months over there and it was great. And honestly, you will meet so many people you will rarely be alone.
When I went up from Sydney to cairns I just got a hop on hop off bus pass from Greyhound buses, which was pretty good. A lot of the distances are pretty far and it is nice to have the ability to take an over night bus and save in accom and save your day.
There are other tour companies like the Oz Experience, which I have generally not heard amazing things about. I did a similar trip when I was in NZ where u go with a tour company. The upside is that you get to know some of the people (tho with hop on hop off it is very likely you wont be on the same schedule as the friends yo make). the down side is that it costs at least twice as much for the same bus ride, you are going to be forced to stop in certain places you might otherwise not have stopped at and you wont have overnight buses and thus will waste a lot of your precious daytime on a bus.
So that is something to consider. Greyhound worked just fine for me and i never had any problems getting on the bus i wanted.
If you go up the east coast, I recomend doing your Fraser Island 4x4 drive tour out of Rainbow Beach - I went with Dingos and it was really awesome
So some hostels that I remember:
Byron Bay: The Art Factory - really good vibe, is one of the coolest in australia
Sydney: wake up and big are both pretty clean and big, but pretty expensive, I really liked Boomerange Backpackers in Sydney tho. Its not to expensive and has a really good atmosphere and organized activities with the hostel everynight which is great for meeting people
Cairns: Gilligans is great for a few days, clean and party central I lived here for 2 months. it was a bit much, but for a few days it'll be great
Noosa: the YHA here is really nice (tho im not usually a fan of yha's this one has a great vibe).
bu if you end up in a bad hostel its not the end of the world
Have so much fun and I hope this helps
Hi there,
I am travelling to Australia first week of February 2011 alone as well. I am a 24 year old female from Canada.
Very nervous about doing the trip alone, but am finding myself reassured that everything will be great from all of you, so thank you!
I am looking to travel from Sydney to Cairns making many stops along the way. Please email me if you are interested in meeting up
Hiya,
Myself and my friend Cath are doing Sydney to Cairns Feb 2011 too. We are both females and were thinking of hiring a campervan for 1.5 month to do the route. We'd be happy to discuss sharing the van if you'd like to e-mail me, good luck on your travels if we don't hear from you.
Sinead
