Easiest way to get from San Francisco to Santa Cruz is as follows:
When in San Francisco, get a bus, a metro or walk from downtown down to the corner of 4th Street and Martin Luther King Streets. It's about 5 blocks--and if you don't know how to get there ask anyone where the SF Giants baseball park is--which is at 3rd and King.
At 4th and King, get on the CalTrain and ride it to San Jose (the Dideon Station) (about a $9 charge), which is across the street from the HP Pavilion where the San Jose Sharks play. At this station, get on the 17 Bus, which will take you to downtown Santa Cruz (about a $4 charge). The bus stop is about five blocks from the beach and two blocks from the main section of San Jose--one block over and 1 block down. The section right next to the beach is a bit "sketchy" down by the boardwalk, so either stay near the beach close to the pier or else try to find a blace to stay closer to the very small downtown area.
