Hi , I'm Ariving in Sydney 1st feb with my girlfriend we would prefer to stay in a private room than a dorm , can anyone suggest a good hostel to stay in, and what sort of costs should we expect???

Many of the hostels in Sydney have private rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The YHA hostels particularly are good. The Harbour/Rocks hostel is in one of the best locations in the city & has a great roof top area with spectacular views.

I've been looking and most rooms tend to cost around £50-£60 English pounds a night, is this the price we should expect when we arrive ????

It would be better to talk in Australian Dollars, as the exchange rate changes so much. With the current exchange, that's about $85-$100 which sounds about right (but could also be lower or higher depending where you look) for a private double room in a lot of Sydney hostels.
Peter actually whipped up last week showing the average price of a dorm bed in Sydney in December and January... we'll probably be adding this in 'live format' to our page in not too long, but for now I think this gives a pretty good idea of just what kind of prices are 'normal'. It's pretty insane over New Years!!
Having a bit of a look at the prices in Sydney around then the range for private rooms is from about $60 AUD up to $150 AUD. So a middle ground of about $80-$100 would seem quite decent. And don't rule out hotels either if you're staying in a private. Sometimes budget hotels work out cheaper than hostel private rooms.
In any case, being there in Feb is clearly a lot better than over xmas as you can see from that graph Sam linked to
