The main problem i had in europe was getting to the item i wanted, which always seemed to be at the bottom of my bag. So front loaders are alot easier, far better than top loaders imo.
I liked the cables/bungees which were attatched to the front of my other bag, good for some people bad for others so some sort of net/bungee system that is removable (i know you can buy these to go on but id go for the bag that had them as an option)
Used a berghaus freeflow 50
Now have a Beghaus Jalan

I have a deuter futura vario 50 +10 and it is a toploader and the best think about it is that the bottom pocket has the option to be an access point to the bottom of the bag via a zip. I have heard some horror stories were peoples freeloader zips have broken and all their belongs have spilled out. but i think that is rare these days. the front vs top loader is really a down to the individual.
I think the biggest problem with backpacks is that they are very very hard to secure fully for when you are traveling to countries that have drug problems. you just can't lock down the top lid. I recommend a lockable zip inside the lid to solve this problem, that way you can lock it when in risky transit and leave to zip undone the rest of the time.
something i really like about my daypack (Oakley backpack (25L)) is that it comes with a strong, durable and waterproof bag liner that can be pulled out and zip cord tied. I used it for dirty clothing, shoes and wet stuff. its the only one i have ever seen and it is AWESOME!

There are certain things I always look for in a decent backpack:
two compartments so you can seperate your dirty washing
an attachable day bag
a hidden compartment
a rain cover that can also act as a 'wandering hands' preventer
Right now I'd appreciate some bungees on the outside. I paid for a fortune for my bag and it's got none.
hey i have a berghaus jalan rucksack with wheels. I'm a girl so it's nice to be able to wheel it around once in a while... but the wheels add 4kg to the weight, so when I do sometimes pick the thing up it's sooo heavy. WOuld be great to have a rucksack with wheels that don't weigh so much... I'm currently in Thailand with the blasted thing... think you can design something quick for me?!?!?!?! haha
hmm other stuff. maybe they could sell rucksacks with really good padlocks / security as you always have to buy these seperately and I had my bag broken into last week as i had a cheapish 3 combo lock.
also maybe the mesh bit that zips up on the flap of the rucksack (inside) could not be mesh, but instead a waterproof area so that you could put damp towels... that's one bug bear i have... putting my wet towel on top of my other clothes as it hasn't dried in the hostel/guest house in time before my next move...
will keep thinking of others...
I have my trusty Karimoor frontloading back pack....it is 12yrs old and still going strong! The zips are still zipping...!! I can lock both of the 2 compartments.....it is not quite as waterproof as it was...but I just use a separate waterproof cover!
