I've been traveling 3 years with the cheapest phone I could find. It doesnt have any of the bells and whistles, but the battery lasts forever and its bullet proof. Its also unlocked so each country I travel in all I do is pick up a pre paid sim and Im in business.
I did a search for rugged smart phone and came up with this.
Looks nice, but wonder how the battery will fair, plus you probably can't unlock it from your service provider which means you'll be paying hefty bills for use.
The biggest problem is really that you get stung with roaming costs using your phone outside of the country you have the plan in. No matter what phone you have, those roaming costs can be insane!!
Yep i nearly bought the Motorala Defy, until i realized that no matter what contract i get, it would all be pointless when i leave the UK as the internet texts and calls are all UK limited.
So i need a plan that is global.
I am surprised that there is no plan like this.
Something along the lines of you pay x amount a month and get calls and texts within whatever country you are in that piggybacks on a local carrier?
They are just lazy, it can be done.
Any further suggestions would be helpful.
Another important thing is to get a quad-band GSM phone.
My mobile recently broke, so I dug out an old, cheap one I had from the back of a drawer. However, when I was in North America, it wasn't working because it was only a dual-band GSM phone.
Also, try and get a phone you can remote . Check out this website for some tips and links to unlock models and codes. That way you can buy a SIM only pay-as-you-go in your location, and get some savings that way.

If you're looking for ruggedness, I might suggest checking out the OtterBox cases. They're fantastic for durability, and they are made for many different kinds of phones. Just make sure to get the right one for your phone, if you go this route!
