Just be aware that late December puts you in the Christmas season and from what Ive been seeing the backpackers accommodations are not only filling up fast if not already filled up, but they have instigated a ridiculous minimum stay, some of 2 weeks.
1. As safe as any other city.
2. Yes public transport is easy and you can walk most places around the CBD.
3. There have been incidents of racist violence in Australia, but these seem to have been not only targeted at Indians, but its more a male thing. Nothing a girl should need to worry about.
4. A rough guide for me seems to be about $100Au per day. That's maybe a little high, but averaged out, covers you for some travel costs and expenses like tourist attractions.
Australia is a safe country. I read a lot of aussie papers online & don’t think that there should be a reason to worry while going to Australia. Obviously you need to stick to the basics of travelling to stay safe in an alien country. Public transport is good in Sydney so you won’t have problem travelling around. Like avoid talking in a loud manner or do not play loud music while travelling as you might disturb others. Police and administration is quite strict to keepthe tourists in their country safe. So don’t worry about it and enjoy your trip.
Sydney is like any other major western city, it is fairly safe and the law enforcement is quite good. Using common sense will get you a long way, avoid walking around alone at night and visiting obviously undesired venues. The public transport is usually good, the rail and bus systems will probably be most useful to you. You can visit the for more details on stations and train times. Honestly I wouldn't worry about racism, the few incidents that have occurred have been in Melbourne and I would consider them rare.
