I will be flying to Hong Kong this xmas and I am currently in Lansing, MI which is 1.5 hours away from the detroit airport. I was looking at the prices from Detroit to Hong Kong and it is more expensive than Lansing to Hong Kong. But the thing with flying from the Lansing airport is that I will have 3 stops in between until I get to Detroit where the plane flies to Hong Kong.
That's not how it works! If you tried to do that, I believe the airline would automatically cancel your entire ticket. You're paying less because the demand for travel is less in Lansing than in Detroit.
Daawgon is correct--if you do not show up for your trip in Lansing, the trip will be canceled and when you try to board in Detroit they will not honor your ticket.
Now there is a way around this on the return--that is, if you do not check your luggage but instead have a carry-on, you could just leave the airport in Detroit on the return. However, since you boarded the plane in Lansing on the outbound trip, that's where your car will be--so unless you havea buddy who can take you back from Detroit to Lansing, you're kind of stuck on the return as well.
