Good hostels to book in Melbourne....

Hey i'm travelling on my own from Ireland to Melbourne in January and just wanna know names of any recommended hostels that i could book into for my first week...Any recommendations are much appreciated

Pint on Punt

I stayed in a couple of different hostels in Melbourne: Toad Hall is a quiet and cosy place in the city centre and Base in St Kilda is good if you are looking for somewhere more lively.

I travel to Melbourne fairly frequently and have stayed at the quite a few times. It is close to the Crowne Casino and within easy walking distance of Southern Cross station. Fridays and Saturday's it is pretty noisy, with the club that is attached to the hostel. During the week when the people aren't clubbing until 3 or 4am it is a lot less noisy. I know that this is a hostel where people stay for a while when finding their feet in Melbourne on a working holiday. It isn't one of the cheaper hostels, but one of the cleaner ones and still not that expensive if you stay in the dorms which are 4-6 people dorms. You get a locker (you need to provide the lock) and you get a towel. All Nations backpackers is a more central one, but unless it has had a make over since I stayed there about 4 years ago, I would strongly advise against staying there. That is also where a lot of people on working holiday visas set up for a while, but it is a dump and is in a noisy location.
