Residency Permits in Poland

I am wondering if anybody has any advice for me to come to Poland. I am coming to visit friends for a decent amount of time and found out that I will most likely need a VISA. However, my trip begins January 19 and I will not have time to get a VISA before then. Would I be able to travel to Poland (as an American citizen not needing a VISA to enter the country for under 90 days) and apply for a residence permit before that 90 days is up? I am nervous that if I try to do this that immigration laws won't allow it. Would I be okay as long as I have all my documents, finances, and everything I need up to date? Is this residence permit process more difficult than I am anticipating?

Poland is in the Schengen Zone, and US citizens can stay in the country for up to 90 days out of every 180 days. To stay longer than this you need to apply for a long-stay visa before travelling to Poland. It is possible to apply for a Residence Permit for business or study reasons but, again, this needs to be done through the Polish Consulate in your country before leaving for Poland. http://www.washington.polemb.net/?document=96 It would have been wiser to look into the visa situation before making travel arrangements.
