Here in Peru, the food is really cheap ( and generally very good ), its easy to find a complete course menu for 5 soles ( 1,50 Eur )
There are cheap hotels from 20 soles/night.
For the local life and voluntary work , you can try to contact http://www.aldeayanapay.org/ , they work with local poor childs.
They wont pay you, but the work can include cheap lodging in cusco.

it is a good idea volunteering here in Peru, i also do this in my spare time.
you can find this in the Capital - Lima or in provinces like Cusco, or Iquitos
