Australian national wants to go to GERMANY

Hey guys, I've had a bit of a look around the forum now and I can't find an exact answer for what I want.

I had thought that as long as you don't stay more than 3 months at a time, you can go in and out of the Shengun states as often as you like.

This is somewhat true, you can come and go as often as you like. What is limited is the amount of time you can spend in Germany.

1) Roughly 50 % of your time have to be spend outside the Schengen Area.

2) If you have been in Germany for 90 days at a stretch you need to stay away for 91 days to get another 90 days at a stretch again.

if I spend less than 3 months in Germany, how often can I go back? and do the 90 days clearance to go back to the country for 3 months start from the last time I leave?

You can come back as often as you like until your 90 days in a 180 day period are up.

Yes, the clearance starts the day after you leave.

Essential you take a calendar and mark the days in and out of the Schengen area. Count 180 days forward from every day of entry, make sure that you are not above 90 days inside Schengen within those 180 days. Note that entry and exit days count as days inside.
