cheap travel into and around south france

Me and a few friends are going on a very spontaneous trip to the south of france, however apart from using our own cars I am looking for some advice as to what other options we have to get down there for as little as possible.. any suggestions

Flying on a budget airline is much the cheapest way to get there. Ryanair currently have flights to/from Biarritz from £15.99 each way, for example.

Once you're there local trains are not too expensive. Local buses are cheaper, probably the cheapest option, but they don't seem too keen to publish timetables and fares on the Internet. If there are a few of you it might work out pretty cost effective to rent a car once you get there.
