Road Trip from San Fransico to New York

Hi Everyone,

Hi there,

With 2-3 weeks I would stay in the west, starting in SF and ending in Los Angeles. What you can do as an itinerary could be:

  • 2 days San Francisco
  • 2 days Yosemite NP
  • 1 day Death Valley
  • 2 days Las Vegas
  • 4 days for Grand Canyon, Monument Valley and maybe Bryce Canyon (nicer than Grand Canyon)
  • 5 days for San Diego and Los Angeles, some beaches etc

Add a few days of driving and you are already close to 3 weeks.

Have fun!
Mike

Great! Thanks heaps for that info. I was doing a bit more research today and was starting to think maybe to stay on the west just due to the hiring of the camper van can only be picked up & dropped off on the west.

Would you say hiring a campervan would be a cheaper option than hostels, buses etc.? I know it might be expensive on fuel but i thought it has a bed and place to cook so it will save on costs there. And at least we have a vehicle to do whatever we like?

You're welcome

I am not sure about the costs of camper and camping versus bus plus hostels, but regarding transportation in the USA: apart from some direct city to city trains and/or buses, the way to go is on the road with your own vehicle: campervan, car, motor etc. Maybe even if you'll pay a little extra, at least you are able to visit places which can not be reached by public transport and you'll enjoy more freedom. And after 3 weeks you will probably have visited more places compared to sticking to buses.

Have fun!
Mike

If you are staying in the west, recommend you keep to the cooler northern regions.
Should you visit Yosemite, August is high season and you should book campsites at once, if there are any left at this point. You may wind up staying outside the park.

Death Valley and Las Vegas can be really hot in August, and the interior of a non-air conditioned camper van could reach cabin temperatures of 140 degrees Fahremheit. Desert exploration in the summer is not to be taken lightly. The vehicle needs to be in sound mechanical condition, carry extra water and newbies need to remain close to main roads in case of problems enroute. Cell phones do not work in all parts of US National Parks due to government restrictions on tower placements. so you should not count on using cell phones off the main roads.

Best of luck on your trip.

Thanks for that information. I didnt really think about the heat in the back area there while sleeping! I know theres air con in the front drivers area. Im not sure what to do about that.

I know the van comes with road side assist and we will have to carry lots of water. Well being from Australia we werent going to take a mobile anyways. I hope we will be right in the campervan I am a bit concerend. But it might be the cheapest way..
