Been researching this topic non stop now and was wondering if there is anyone who is currently on a RTW trip or just finished and is using/used either a backpack or travel pack as their only bag which they could take as carry on baggage?
If you're not camping and you're using hostels/hotels in fairly warm countries then with modern clothing (easy to hand wash and dry overnight) it's very easy to travel with a 35 - 40 litre carry-on size backpack.
I never use a daypack at home so I never use one travelling (I have a small manpurse) so can't help you there.
Have fun with your research.
Cheers,
Terry
Earlier this year I traveled for a month with this day pack I bought it to carry my laptop in safely. Its pretty fancy and expensive, but very well made and organized. I have to say it was so nice to not have to check a bag at the airports and also nice jumping from cabs and buses. I had a smaller very light weight bag that I kept in the big bag, so when i was settled in a guest house I could use the small one as my daypack and not have to unload everything from the SwissGear. For a month in one season, hot weather this was fine, but if it had been longer or id needed more cold and wet weather gear it would be a problem. Theres also a problem i had forgotten when i got to the airport. No liquids in carry on bag. Means i had dump shampoos, toothpaste and all that sort of stuff.
Hey Dodger, thanks for your reply. I have come across this bag actually and quite liked it although it does look a bit fancy.
What was the make of your light weight bag that you used?

Its is fancy, but nothing extraneous, everything it has, it has for a purpose, what can you expect from the people that brought you the Swiss Army Knife!
Haha it was "knock off Nike" $2 from India. It's really nothing more than a nylon shell with straps, it has one small zippered pocket on the front.
