Family of 5 relocating overseas - seeking employment advice

Our family has been researching relocating overseas for the better part of last year, but one glaring issue that we haven't been able to resolve is employment. So we're turning to you for your input and advice, preferably based off of your own experiences.
Reading forums posts we've noticed that there are quit a few Americans living overseas while working for American companies. I'm rather fond of this idea as it would be easier to secure employment "stateside" than online or worse case once we've relocated. Being paid in dollars I believe gives us better purchasing power over local currency (especially in south america and asia) and affords us a "higher standard of living" in those areas.
So, to save everyone from my prolonged rambling let me cut to the chase: 1) How do we go about finding these companies? 2) What sort of jobs are we talking about? 3) What are the advantages of living overseas while working for an American company 4) What are the drawbacks?
Thanks for reading our thread and hopefully overloading us with massive amounts of usefull information

Knowing your work experience might be of some help. If you are a road sweeper I wouldn't hold out much hope of being in demand, but if you are a dab hand at brain surgery you may have more options.
