I'm looking to do a 2/3 week Greek island hopping tour in July but was a bit concerned about travelling alone. I've done the east coast of Australia on my own before, but that seemed very organised. I love adventures and am quite happy to book ferries on the day, and book accomodation when I arrive at the islands. I'm fairly flexible. What islands would you suggest and any tips you can pass my way would be really appreciated. Also, does anyone have ideas about cost per day? And also would you suggest flying to Athens first or to another of the Greek islands? Many Thanks!
Your questions are too generic to answer since you're not telling us where you're flying from or exactly when you're planning to travel. From mid-July onwards it's high season, so you may not be able to book ferries on the day and accommodation will be harder to find on the spot. My suggestion would be to bring your trip forward to the end of June, fly to Athens and then work out an itinerary from there, returning to Athens a couple of days before your flight home to take in the sights. The Cyclades are the most popular island group for island hopping as the islands are small and fairly close together. Which ones you choose will depend on your personal preferences. You should consult a good guidebook or internet site like http://www.greek-islands.us/greek-islands/index.asp to narrow down your choices. Cost per day depends on many different variants, some islands are more expensive than others (i.e. Mykonos and Santorini more expensive than Naxos or Paros) and it also depends on when you're travelling (July more expensive than June) and what kind of accommodation / dinner options you're after. Also what kind of transport you choose: fast ferries (catamarans, flying cats etc.) are more expensive than conventional (slower) ferries.
