Does anyone have any thoughts or ideas when the mention of rafting down the mississippi river comes around?
Isn't the Mississippi rather large for rafting? Especially down that low. When I think of rafting I think of white water etc not a very wide slow moving river. It will feel like you are standing still I'm thinking.
It may help if you are a bit more specific about the term 'rafting'. I agree with Dave (above) - I envision white water rafting in an inflatable raft. Also, are you looking to cover the full length of the river or only a portion? It is 2300+ miles in length with several locks and dams.
Here is what one group considered 'rafting' on the Mississippi:
i am looking to Huck Finn it. the photos you had there on the family rafting the river were more of what i had in mind.
lazy river rafting. no crazy white water. no rushing. no yelling and shouting and stampeding about. just sitting on your raft (which would include a tipee, or shelter and fireplace) fishing for supper. see how long you could make it. i have a vacation coming up this winter, and dearly want to get outta Cold Canada.
I live next to the Mississippi River, and I raft once a year, but I wouldn't raft on that river. The current is very strong and the water is very dirty.
I would recommend going to North Carolina, around the Nantahala River and the awesome Chattooga River. They filmed the movie Dilverance there.

A fireplace on a raft? That sounds pretty awesome actually. Let us know what you find out.
