Hello, i have never travelled like that before and late next year when i finish school me and my friend are planning going backpacking in africa, south and north america. When you are planning a trip like this do you book all flights before you start it and all the ways to get between places?, should i always have a backup plan?, what kind of stuff do i need so i wont get in trouble crossing borders and that kind of things?. Clearly you can see that i'm a newby in this but if anyone would like to help me it would be great, maybe tell me how you plan youself?

I am currently planning a trip in Central America for this coming summer. I have booked flights into and out of Cancun for 9 weeks later and am hoping to just travel around and figure it out when I get there.
Have you travelled Asia or Europe before at all? The best way is to usually get a lonely planet book or travel guide or do some research online and figure out how long you roughly want to spend in a country and just book your international flights in and out, then sort internal transport and border crossings out once you are there. Visas you should always look up before you go as they can be complicated but other than that you will always meet people who will be doing the same or similar things and people will recommend places to stay and visit the whole time. As long as you have a rough plan and time frame you should be fine but it is nice to have enough time to just stay in a place if you fall in love with it, or join other travellers and take things as they come.
