Going to Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador with a friend for 7 weeks. Then through Cancun to Playa Del Carmen for a wedding, staying a week. Want to extend my trip and go somewhere just to hang out and relax.
Cuba is a short flight from Cancun. It's a good place with friendly people, and they like the dollar there. Maybe a short break in Havana and then off to one of the beaches?
Mexico currently has problems with drug cartels. They are mainly murdering each other but sometimes innocents get caught up. You would be unlucky to get caught up in the violence but it is not impossible. I've bussed all around Mexico several years ago but would now fly if possible.
Do be careful of petty theft there. I've been three times and despite my efforts have had stuff stolen each time, once by a little old lady sitting behind me on a bus. Other countries including Peru have problems too with petty theft.
Try the Michel Thomas Spanish course. After a week you'll have enough to talk to a someone in Spanish.
I agree, if I was you I'd jump ont he short flight to Cuba. Loads of history there and some great beaches!
I'm doing the opposite journey to you... flying into Mexico and going down to South America. I also looked at flying into the U.S and getting a coach down but the safety facot put me off.
Thanks for the replies. I would LOVE to go to Cuba....however, as a US citizen this is not currently an option for me ;o( Any other suggestions?
