I am planning on heading to Central America by the end of January 2012. I have found some great flights for under $50 that will get me into El Salvador or Guat. I would love just to show up somewhere and find my way around but I know NO Spanish. Do you think that I should have a solid idea of where I want to go and what I want to see before I go? I have never really done any traveling and I hope to end up in either Costa Rica or Honduras to meet up for a job on a boat.
You will defiantly need a plan. Unlike the rest of the world, CA does not speak much English. Its going to be very difficult for you to travel without having and Spanish under your belt.
Good luck.
Thanks
Some Spanish will help, but if you have time you could do a crash course of Spanish in Guatemala (around lake Atitlan is cheap and there are plenty of schools) which will help you get by. With regards a plan, no, just go for it! Head south into Honduras visit Copan and the bay Islands, travel overland by bus into Nicaragua from there (Honduras does not have much else to offer, neither does El salvador). Northern Nicaragua, head to Leon, down to Granada, lake Ometepe, San juan del Sur and into Costa Rica! have a great trip!!
Buy the South American Handbook Central America, it will give you lots of information on travelling there, and I'm sure you'll learn the language as you go along.
i m fully agree with you jaredellis
