Hi All,
No, you don't need a sleeping bag. In fact, almost all hostels forbid sleeping bags, as they spread bed bugs.
If you're only staying at the hostels pushed by the bus company you're travelling with, I guess you could make do with a wheeled thing, as the busses tend to drop you off right at the doorstep. But if you also make your way independently to other hostels, and/or make full use of the hop-on, hop-off nature by staying overnight at halfway points, then a backpack is really more practical, as it's much easier to find your way to your hostel with your luggage on your back, particularly in the more hilly towns.
Backpacks make life while travelling easier in my opinion. If you can though, I'd find one of those packs that opens out like a suitcase, so all your stuff is easy to get to.
Hi guys,
Thanks for the advice I’m off this weekend to check some backpacks/rucksacks out and try and asses sizes ect, The tip about the access zip was great I’d not really thought about that but then I’ve not really had much time to think or plan as I decided over new year I wanted to do this and booked the flights and bus thing this Monday - so the planning really starts now!!
I found the perfect solution - a backpack with small wheels. Maybe a little heavier than conventional backpack, but SO good at train stations, walking to hotel etc etc. especially in hot weather, but also did several three-four day hikes with it.
Thanks Deborahrhode I did try searching on line rucksacks with wheels but nothing came up but ideally that is what I'd like. I'm off to Canterbury (in English version!) tomorrow to investigate so I'll see what I find! Thanks again.
Hi all,
does anyone have any specific backpacks they can recomend?
Thank you in advance.
Backpacks are a very personal thing; one which sits very well on my back might be horrible for you. The best thing to do with them is to go to a physical store, and try on a whole bunch, preferably weighted down (good outdoor stores should have weights handy for this purpose), so you get a feel for what it'd be like to really walk around with them.
As for me, I prefer rucksack, those wheelie suitcases are not comfortable, you shouldn't take sleeping bag with u, if you're going to stay in hotels.
Ok Thanks for the advice Sander, will do
