I hate going on group tours/organized trips, and enjoy the freedom and flexibility of traveling by myself. The only downside to it is that I have to do the homework myself and plan the trip. Last summer, I planned a 3 week trip to the 4 provinces at Atlantic Canada for my family. We traveled 4000km in that 3 weeks, so you can imagine how much planning was required. I am very detail oriented, so I had to plan out what we did at each hour and which restaurants to visit at each city. It was time-consuming, but it was definitely worth it.
Research is such a big part of the fun. I love planning trips, i have more planned than are ever feasible for me to do.
But I am not detail orientated. I read about the destination, so that you know what i am going to see and so i can understand the history and i'll often make note of any suggestions that interest me, attractions, restaurants, etc.
Then I get to where i'm going and never look at those notes again and just go on the adventure that the destination has to offer. Sometimes i'll pull out my notebook and make sure there was nothing i really wanted to do and had forgotten about but usually you find better things when you are there than you ever can researching and planning.
Really for me my research is more important in terms of picking the destinations and thinking as much as i can be bothered about logistics, making sure there's hostels, and train links. Then it stops.
I like to see what the city has to offer once i get there in terms of filling my day. Sometimes i'll have noted suggestions to do but i enjoy sitting and wandering watching in a new city just as much as i enjoy the attractions. Pick up maps and brochures and talk to people you soon find out what there is to do.
So after some rambling, i'm a bit of both, i love researching and planning because i love to read about countries and cities and things to do but when it comes to the finer details, i don't plan. I don't have a scheduled day and scheduled places to eat because you often find something better on the way and if you have plans you miss out on the adventure.

I agree with you that researching the destination ahead of time and then traveling in a semi-spontaneous manner would be the most adventurous method. Having the opportunity to converse with locals and understanding their neighborhood is always fun and enlightening.
I've traveled both alone and with family and friends. So I would say, when traveling alone, it is possible to be more flexible, but if its with family and friends, it is probably better to stick with a schedule, or else other traveling partners will start complaining about meandering randomly.

nice topic! i prefer to plan the everthing includ the travel rounte,scenery spots,food,hotel etc to make sure every minutes are worth consumption . last year i travelled with my friends to Asia and we had a great time there.we started our travel from the well know silk road instead of attend any travel agency. The most impressive thing we confronted may that we suffered in Tibet of China as we almost died due to the oxygen deficit. you know it's really very dangerous and excited.Now i have created my blog to share the experience and tips we have in Asia countries.hope it can helps someone plan to go to the Asia. All in all,DIY travel project is cool and nice!
