Hi guys!
My girlfriend and I are living in Melbourne for one year, doing our Master in this fantastic city and are going to do a road trip from Brisbane to Melbourne, starting in two weeks.
Have you decided on a route from Brisbane to Melbourne? I'd take the coast from Brisbane to Sydney and possibly down to Jervis Bay and then travel through the Snowy Mountains and on to Melbourne.
1. The best will probably be the most expensive, usually full comprehensive insurance is an option, make sure you ask about it and read the fine print. Britz, Thrifty and Hertz seem to be the 3 biggest rentals, and Wicked, Spaceship, Hippy Campers seem to cater for the backpacker market. I've only ever rented a car from Hertz and it was fine.
2. I'd go for a smaller van, not the winnebago type ones you see around. As it's summer look for opening windows and tailgates, some provide a mosquito net for the tailgate so you can sleep with it open. Some have dual batteries and a sink which is also good.
3. As above, the more ventilation the better, if it comes with a mosquito net you can sleep with the tailgate and windows open, park so that the breeze goes through the van. If there's no breeze it'll be hot everywhere and you just have to live with it, a small 12V fan might be an option in this weather.
4. Wild camping as you call it is only permitted in certain areas, usually in the less populated areas of Australia. Rest areas provide good overnight stops and are free, but often not close to tourist attractions. National Parks campgrounds cost from $3.50 per person to about $10 per person depending on how popular they are and what facilities are provided. If you need more info on camp sites send me a message.
Hi Ben,
Further to Tim's comments, there is a book available called Camps 6, which has become the campers bible in Australia. It lists thousands of free or very cheap campsites around Australia and is available from many bookstores and travel stores. Also direct from the pulishers at campsaustraliawide.com
We use it all the time. They costs from $60 upwards depending on which one you buy.
Hope that's of some help to you Ben.
Happy and safe travels,
Jessica
