New Orleans GUMBO

I'm going on a cross country road trip and on my have to do list is to eat some quality gumbo made locally in New Orleans. I would like some local input, please : )

I searched over on for you:

Just did 17 Gumbos in 4 days

What a blast--

The standouts FOR US were

K-Pauls (classic dark roux)
Herbsaint (see above)
Mr. B's (the Ya Ya--not the best but very good)
GW Fins (surprised us)
Luizza's BTT (more soupy but fantastic flavor)

2 disappointing things of note---MOST places we found (even some of note) water their Gumbo with either stock or H2O in order to stretch it out ---YUCK.

and second --could they please use some DECENT size shrimp in the Seafood Gumbo?--popcorn size seems to be the norm (we would GLADLY pay more for larger ones)

All in all a great great trip--
I'll post more about it later

K-Paul's--absolutely, the best (possibly not only in New Orleans, but in the entire country).

Had the blackened swordfish with a fantastic light saffron sauce, white wine, gumbo, and a small side of jambalaya. Followed this up with creme brulee and a cappuccino with a shot of Frangelico.

Can't eat like that everyday or I'd have to go on the "biggest loser" show. Fortunately, I walk a lot to see all the sights when I visit New Orleans.

P.S. I had both gumbo and jambalaya in at least two other places during the other four days I was in town. All were very good, but K-Paul's was the best of the bunch. Make sure to also try the beignets at the Cafe du Monde (near the French Market) while in New Orleans. And my sister says she thinks Commanders Palace has the best food with great atmosphere in the New Orleans area.

--but don't forget that San Francisco, New York, Beverly Hills (near LA), Dallas, Boston, Seattle, Miami, Atlanta, Washington, D. C., Baltimore, Memphis, and Chicago all have great restaurants as well.
