Hi everyone,
Hi Caire!.
I am arriving in Melbourne around mid feb, also on my own!. I am quite nervous but more excited now I've realised how many people travel by themselves. Have you pre booked any hostels before you arrive yet?.
I'm looking for work for two months ish and then like you wanting to travel up north up the east coast around April.
I was orginally going to apply for a starter package where a company sorts out your taxfile no and bank account etc, but from what I have found out on here it seems like awaste of money. Fingers crossed it will be easy enough to meet people, and find a job whislt we are out there =]

Hey Donna,
I havent pre booked any hostels as was looking at going down the starter package route so at least I didnt land in Melbourne without any clue, but as you said yourself the general feel is that they are not worth it, so now I dont know. Have you pre booked?
Sounds like you have much more of a plan than me! lol I have no idea how long to stay in each place or anything.
The more I look at it the more it apears that a lot of people go by themselves so hopefully it wont take long to find our feet
Haha, I still feel pretty unorganised but like you said I think once we get there we'll find lots of people in the same position as us (fingers crossed!).
I want to book a hostel for a few nights just for when I arrive so I have some direction to go to from the airport but then I think after that it will be finding wheres cheapest and the best location when looking for work. I think finding work is the thing I'm most worried about as I dont have lots of money saved up. I have made a list of a few hostels that seem to have good reviews, Base, Habitat HQ, Greenhouse backpackers and ritz for backpackers seem to have good reviews. Some are in central area and some in St Kilda, but not sure where will be best to find work.
I have found TAW.COM have a mini package that if you pay something like £45 you can search there jobsite before you leave and start applying through them and also they set you up with a taxfile no and bank account for when you arrive. I'm considering doing that as its not as expensive, plus its one less thing I have to think about sorting out when I arrive.
When are you arriving in Melbourne?
x
That sounds like a good price, the cheapest I found was about £230!! but you get two nights hostel, a trip, bank account, tax and medicare help. Plus 12 months access to a job network. Change my mind daily about wether to bother with it or just wing it! lol but think I like the idea of having some where to go when first get there, and not just end up wandering the airport aimlessly! lol
I have heard a lot about St Kilda and it supposed to be a good place to find work.
Am looking at arriving about the 17th Feb if all goes to plan, what about you?
x
Yer I think I found one for that price. I was going to go with STA starter package but when i rang the lady up and priced up how much hostels were booking them myself with everything else it jsut seemed a tad expensive. I jsut hope it will be easy to meet people, but I'm sure lots of people are in the same position as us.
Yer I like the sounds of St Kilda, I'm looking to book a few nights in a hostel by the end of next week, so I'll let you knw what I end up going for .
I fly on the 6th Feb but I'm going to see my cousin in Perth for around a week, so I should be arriving in Melbourne around the 15th 16th of Febuary.
I keep worrying I have forgotten to do something. How long you looking at working for?, I'm hoping they will take travellers on for a short period of two months because I dont really want to work much longer than that.
x
OOh not long to go now then, how exciting from what Ive read it is quite common for people to be travelling alone although it doesnt make it any less daunting.
Im always finding something else that I havent thought of, and am sure that there is always going to be something that we wish we had taken but didnt, but think we have to just do our best as long as got the important stuff should be ok.
I dont want to work for too long either, its more just to keep the funds up so can stay out there really.
Yeah let me know where you end up and can meet up for a drink when we out there, friendly face if you like.
x
Yeh sure!,... do you have facebook?, probably be easier to contact and keep up to date on where we are. I'm very excited about getting there now!.. especially for the nicer weather =]
x
Yeah i bet beats this cold, windy weather. I can't wait to get out there
Yep Facebook is Claire wise

I would reconsider. Getting a taxfile number and bank account is really easy, and you'd have to give them the exact same information as you'd have to give the tax office and bank, so it's not actually saving you any hassle.
FWIW, the really easy steps for these two things: Fill in the forms once you've arrived in Australia (giving them your hostel's address to have the number sent to), and walk into any bank branch with your passport and AUD $50 for an initial deposit, telling them you want to open a bank account, giving them your hostel's address to send the debit card to, and telling them you don't want bank statements (some banks also have forms online to set up the account beforehand, but you still have to walk into a branch with your passport once there).
