I'd say it's probably not worth buying a van for 2 months travel, if something goes wrong with it in that time it'd be the end of your trip and you'll have to worry about registration and insurance.
Renting might be an easier better option, although travelling one way might be a bit more expensive than returning the rental to where you got it. I highly recommend stopping at Jervis Bay on your way, it's an amazing place. If you need any help with finding camping sites, send me a PM.
Is there any reason you chose to travel Melbourne to Sydney? In 2 months you could probably do Melbourne to Brisbane if you wanted to, and there are some nice places between Sydney and Brisbane.
