Solo travel to Oz & NZ - help making a decision please?!!

Hi y'all.

Hi Charlotte,

I definitely think you should see Australia, it is amazing

Im not long back but Im heading back at the end of the year myself. To answer your questions:

1. I am actually talking to a few people on here who Im hoping to meet up with in Australia so this is a good place to start. Hostels are easily booked either online or you could just walk in. Plus you are bound to find solo travellers in hostels.
2. Most hostels do have a noticeboard advertising vacanies plus you can search online or walk into shops with your CV.
3. There are lots of internet cafes plus most hostels have them. Bringing a laptop would probably save you money in the long run but just be careful where you store it.
4. Finally I would recommend Cairns, Airlie Beach, Brisbane and Sydney. These are all on the east coast and I loved every minute I spent there.

Hope this helps a little

I thought Oz was ok, but NZ was amazing! So make sure you go there too! To answer your questions:

1) Very
2) Hostels, in shops/cafes/bars, at recruitment agencies
3) I didn't take a laptop as I didn't have one, but plenty of people I met did
4) The South Island of New Zealand is fantastic and Queenstown for me was far and away the best place I visited in 18 months away, it is beautiful and incredibly social, I had endless good nights out there! All of New Zealand is great. As for Oz, the Great Ocean Road, Tasmania and Perth I liked the best.

You should definitely do it. Three years ago I was in a similar position to you and I went travelling, and it was without the best thing I have ever done. Also you say you are travelling on your own, but you won't be on your own for long I assure you!

Hi, I just back from New Zealand two days ago after six months working and holiday. This is what i experienced.

1) Hostel in New Zealand every where and you will meet many other solo travelers.
2) You can find a lot of info on the board in hostel and from other travelers also.
3) Is very safe and bring a laptop along would be a good idea.
4) Yeah, south island in NZ is totally amazing and i like Queenstown most also. Jaw dropping
scenery are everywhere.

I haven't been to Oz, so i just let you know the situation in NZ. Cheers.

Thanks guys, your messages have been really helpful!

I definately want to bite the bullet and go for it .......I have some more questions......

1. How do you go about getting an Australian bank account?
2. I have found out today that they no longer do career breaks in my work , but there is a possibility of taking short term time off for 3/4 months unpaid....will this be enough time to get a taster of Oz/Nz?

Cheers,

Char x

Hey Char

Cant really answer any of your questions, but just wanted to say..

I'm much in the same situation as you. Just come out of an 8 year relationship in October. Felt a bit lost. So decided In November I was gonna spend a year in Oz, So applied for my visa. Once i got it i knew I'd made the right decision. After Oz gonna hit Nz for a while. Then where ever my feet will take me.

The thing that sold the whole idea to me was, I could stay in this country and do what I've been doing for the last 10 years, or i could cash in my chips as it were, and see what else could be out there waiting for me. I have never ever heard anyone say, I wish i never went travelling. Absolutely everyone I know said it was the best time of their life, and wish they could go back and do it all over again.

So i am gonna bite the bullet, Quitting my job, Selling my car, Not worrying about that house i was gonna buy, and heading out to Oz October/November. Fortune favors the brave right??

Hey Jowah.

Thankyou for your awesome reply. You sound like you are in the same boat as me. All of my mates (literally ALL of them) are settled down, buying houses, having babies, never wanting to leave their cosy lovenests.....and I do feel a little bit lost, hence why I need some questions answering before making my final decision on what to do.

I totally agree with that statement about cashing in your chips to have the best time of your life! Good on ya!

Very true. I kind of look back at the past however many years of my life, where I was unhappy in life in general, mainly due to relationships and really want to do something totally out of my comfort zone and GO!!

I'm fantastic with new people and want to have a blast, so I think you may have pushed me over to the 'travelling' line rather than the 'house' line. My line of thinking is that I can save for a house anytime but I want to have the experience of a lifetime!

Absolutely...Do it.

Your still young enough to have the time of your life, then if you didn't meet the future Oz husband out there and had to come back, you can still start again and do all those things...settle down, baby, house! lol

Do you remember the horrible accident on the M5 beginning of November. That kinda made it a lot easier to decide to do this trip. It made me realise life can be taken from you at the most unsuspecting moment. Life really can be to short.

You should think of this year as a year of firsts. Put yourself out of your comfort zone. I've just moved in with a sky diver. So im gonna do a sky dive in April. It'll scare the hell out of me, but i want to feel like I've lived. That saying.... Everybody dies, but not everybody truly lives..
I always wanted to do an Ironman, so just signed up to one in july. Always wanted to travel Oz, will be there in October. I've never been happier... 2012 will be an awesome year, but 2013 in Oz....That will be unforgettable!

My advice...Start living, you'll love it! The few who do are the envy of the many who only watch. Quote central tonight lol.

Ha ha, quote central too right!!!

That sounds fantastic.

Yeah I do remember the M5 crash. Its not that far from where I live. My brother in law recently passed away from drowning in a river after a night out, he was only 39. Life is definately too short.
I wont use any quotes. i'll leave that down to you!! :P

Sorry to hear about you bro in law. I cant imagine what that must of been like.

So where abouts do you live? I live between Exeter and Taunton. And travel that stretch of road where the crash was everyday nearly. A constant reminder.

So when were you thinking of travelling?
