a lonesome journey to oz at the end of 2012

hey peeps.I plan on going to australia at the end of the year , maybe september or october for 2 months.like many of you on here, this is my first time , so if you could be so kind and answer a few questions.

I usually give AUD $65/day as an estimated minimum budget for Australia (sleeping in dorm rooms, cooking your own meals, travelling on by public transport once a week), so with $4200 you should just squeak by for a 2 month period. But I'd strongly recommend taking more, if just so you can do a few activities, and particularly if you also want to include a return flight to New Zealand.

A week in New Zealand can be worthwhile, but would be far and far too short to really get an overview. Three weeks is what I'd aim for, if you can. (Personally I like New Zealand better than Australia, and would willingly give up seeing significant parts of Australia to spend more time in New Zealand. But I love hiking and nature, which is where New Zealand really shines.)

Oh, and that time of the year I'd start in Cairns and do north to south. Come November it'll start getting very humid up north (the wet season will be about to commence), while down south the nights can still be a bit chilly in September.

Try and spend longer in New zealand if you can, anything less than 2 weeks would be a travesty,Oz is good but NZ is better imo,at the very least it offers something different from Australias beaches and will definately add some variety to the trip.
However much money you scrape together you will have to watch the pennies,Australia is extortionate especially when it comes to booking excursions,if you want to see fraser island, the whitsundays, great barrier reef etc,its gonna cost you! The price of a pint is about 6 pound in Melbourne/Sydney
