lively small towns in England

Friends: I'm seeking the perfect smaller city or town in England that is very appreciative of live music and quality music artists. I'm looking to spend
at least six months there and would require as many of the following attributes as is possible:

excellent local transport (bus,tram,train)
some sunshine
major train links
within 2 hours of London
at least one excellent music venue
university with students (and others) known for love of live music
attractive architecture and city center
local park or attractive common
minimum crime
preferably less than 300,000 people (if possible)

I was in the UK last January through May. While I was living in London I made trips to York and Edinburg, which is actually in Scotland.

Although York is a bit of a hike, about a 5 hour train ride you can still get there from London in a day. I know that there is the University of York and while I was in town I enjoyed some great nights cozy pubs and did hear some decent live music.

Sunshine is hard to come by in the UK, but to enjoy the best weather I would visit in the spring/summer months when the temperature gets into the 70s.

Hope this advice helps!

Definately Brighton!

Re post 3, most trains between London and York take between 2 hrs and 2 hrs 15 mins. The coach is about 5 hours 30 minutes. However I don't know anything about the live music scene in York ...

A friend used to live in Brixton (considered dangerous by some) in south London for many years then he moved to Brighton. I saw him some months later and he said that for the first time in his life, he had started carrying a knife with him.

Lots of druggies there.

I certainly appreciate the responses thus far-very kind of everyone. I'm starting a new thread
with a more specific heading, as i could not edit this one. THANK YOU ALL.

Definately Brighton!

I'd second Brighton and have no idea what Cyberia is talking about. Just the usual scaremongering probably. Yes Brighton has a drug scene, unfortunately this seems to be a problem in most cities these days, but unless those are the circles you are hanging out in, then there is no more of a problem than in any other metro area.

I'm just quoting what a friend told me. He had no reason to lie to me.

What other cities have a very visible drug scene?

I warn people so they can make their own decision. Not try to Dodge the truth like some.

Just because a friend tells you something, doesn't make it the truth! The fact that your friend carry's a knife around with him speaks enough about his character.
