What about Brisbane?

From what I've heard each city in Oz has an identity:
Syndey as the "big city", the hub of Australia
Melbourne is the "artsy", laid back city
and Cairns is the gateway to adventure of the Great Barrier Reef.
Firstly, is this correct? I know it is hard to generalize an entire city, but is this the overall feel of each city?
Secondly, What about Brisbane? I haven't heard anything about this city, what can you tell me? Laid back? Busy? Any info from anyone whose been there would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

I have a flight to Brisbane booked for February 2013..I plan to go there and decide from there where to go and what to do I've read loooads of good things about Brisbane! The scenery, the people, the lifestyle Which is why I booked my flight to the Brisbane airport! What are your plans?

I'm thinking about staying in Syndey for a week then flying to Cairns and working my way back down from May - November '13. I hope to be in Brisbane around Sept or Oct which I'm told is the best time to find work, so I think if I keep hearing good things I'll try and settle in Brisbane for a couple months before moving on

Queen street mall and the Brisbane museum is very famous in Brisbane and is very beautiful city but there is no particular thing that makes him out of the crowd like Harbour bridge in Sydney. But Brisbane have a positive attitude that makes it a genuine new world city.

Brisbane has a nice, laid-back feel to it, but it's not vibrant like Sydney and Melbourne.

The Brisbane harbour bridge climb is really good, and Mount Cootha is good for the views and some nice walks.

I've been to all the cities, Brisbane being my (now) hometown, it's a laid back kind of city, as the post above suggests not incredibly vibrant as Melbourne, which is my favourite Aus city, it just depends what you're looking for, I love it for it's artsy underground kind of feel, it's a trendy place for creatives, they hold all their major international art and design conferences there, in Melbourne.

Sydney is, personally, overrated BUT incredibly historical and touristy, aka the harbour bridge, opera house but it's very dirty unlike Brisbane which would be the cleanest city I've been too, they've been 'remaking' Brisbane for a few years now, I spent four years studying in the heart of Brisbane and from what I can see they're trying to make it like Melbourne only less 'underground' (Melbourne has a lot of graffiti, and the like- but If that happened here, Brisbane city council would no doubt clean anything like that up if it happened)

The city itself doesn't have much but if you can rent a car then head North and visit Steve Irwin's Australia Zoo or if you want something less touristy then visit Maleny and the Glasshouse Mountains, they're beautiful.
