my husband and i are starting a major trip to south america in september and our staring poit is Rio de Janeiro. can anyone give us some pointers on where to stay not too expensive as this trip could last the guts of 8 months and what to see and do in Brazil. After Brazil its Argentina.

For me, the country that had most in, in SA is Peru.
Consider buying a year's insurance. Hopefully you won't need it but if you do you'll be very glad you did.
