We plan to drive to Costa Rica with a Pick-up truck and a trailer
We own land and wish to take some personal effects to our new construction site in South west Costa Rica
We are interested in knowing how to plan border crossing and custom formalities
No one seems to know!!!
I'm more interested in how you plan insurance for your vehicle in those countries? it's possible in case of an accident that is your fault you can pay people off. In some third world countries, notably in Africa they recommend driving to a police station as you may be attacked by a mob if the accident is bad.
At borders they will just check your papers and maybe a quick look through your trailer and luggage.
Driving across those countries is far from driving across Canada or America. I remember a 12 hour bus trip in Guatemala. It would have only taken a few hours in most other countries but the roads were awful, with huge holes so the bus literally went from one side to the other to avoid breaking an axle.
Do take a good map and supplies, especially water.
If you plan on sleeping in the trailer you may very likely get some unwelcome visitors one night in one of those countries. Mexico has become increasingly violent in recent years.
If it was me, I'd fly to Costa Rica and if you want a car there, hire one. The goods would go in a container. There are lots of carrier companies.

I've heard that little old ladies with scissors are a serious threat-YMMV
