Backpacking to Paris-Rome-Venice for the 1st time...

Dear all,

10 hours in each city??? Where did you get the idea that that would be even remotely sufficient?? You don't need an itinerary with such little time: just get to the tourist office, buy a map indicating the high lights, run past them, have dinner, and be on your way again.

You may have done better, instead of buying train tickets, to have got budget flights. Nowadays in Europe, planes are nearly always cheaper than long distance trains. You can do Paris-Rome by budget airline one-way for about €25 and be there in little over an hour. I know the train is more scenic, but it seems such ashame to visit these three fine cities and only have 10 hours in each of them.

Thanks for the response...

Yes, I thought of taking EasyJet from London to Rome. Then train all the way back to London via train. Distance to the airport, check in time, cost of airport transfer & flight ticket comes out to be almost the same as going by train. Still can save some money on hotel. e.g. Night train...

I am visiting my relatives in London and have only 5 days days to spare..

My brief itinerary:
Day 1 Eurostar to Paris
Day 2 Night train to Rome.
Day 3 Take last train to Venice.
Day 4 Night train from Venice to Paris
Day 5 Eurostar back to London.

Should I forgo Venice and stay 1 night in Rome instead?

I won't call this backpacking. It really is a flash trip and never in a million years would I recommend such an itinerary to anyone! You could start by cutting down the number of places, and heck, you can easily spend all 5 days in Paris if you're so inclined. I know it's tempting to try to push to do more, but you really won't see anything. It's basically a trip to pose outside the main monuments, take pics and go again.

Anyway, since you said you've booked for tickets and accommodation etc, I guess there's little point in debating the merit of allowing more time in certain city or not.

For Paris the quickest way to "see" the city is to get on the hop-on, hop-off bus and do the loops that they have continuously. If you have extra time, then maybe, maybe, you can see one or two things close up. Same goes for Rome. As for Venice, there's no such thing as hop-on, hop-off bus, so just take the vaporetto to St Mark's Square, and spend your time at the Ducal Palace and visit the cathedral, then walk around a bit (although a word of warning - it's very easy to get lost in the maze of Venetian alleys).

Agree with lil_lil: since you're sort of based in London, it's best to limit yourself to Paris and 'surroundings' (including maybe Bruges, Anvers and Louvain, all in Belgium). That way, you'll get more out of your trip than with the crazy itinerary you have in mind.

10 hours??? Seriously??? It's not enough to visit the city. I spent a week end at Rome and i only saw half of the city..
Can you have more time?

Dear all,

Thanks for your response...

Yup, I know my itinerary is crazy... Bought a 4 days Eurail France-Italy pass. Therefore, my short trip will be a little bit flexible.
