I want to travel from Panama to USA by bus. Does anyone have a rough estimate of the cost? Anyone wish to join me?
Your journey runs through Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, Guatemala and Mexico before getting to America.
I've bussed through a number of these countries at different times but would hesitate to spend maybe a week on and off buses to do this whole trip.
I checked kayak for a one way flight to Miami on Oct 3rd (you did not say where or when) and United came out at $320.
I've no idea of the cost of the whole bus trip and all it's connections (not cheap) but when you add in food, drink and accommodation when possible, I would think it would be about the same.

Sorry to bombard the post with more comments of not knowing the cost, because I have no experience. However, I do want to say that traveling usually has nothing to do with ease or convenience, but naturally the journey.
I would rather spend 1+ weeks on busses, experiencing and getting into stuff than just flying. Cost is always an issue, but if it is the same or less, take the harder and more rewarding travel route.
If you're travelling straight through then you're not experiencing anything except discomfort, monotony and the very occasional tantalizing sight through the window that you'll never discover. Much better and cheaper to simply fly.
If the trip is taking place over a long period of time then that's obviously a complete different issue.

Terry
Does anyone know whether or not it is safe to travel through mexico right now?
Your question makes no sense.
Mexico is a large, diverse country (almost 7 times larger than Italy, for example) with a HUGE array of different political and cultural situations so whether it's "dangerous" is entirely dependent on your definition.
If you're living in certain areas and involved in the drug trade either by force or voluntarily then yes, it's dangerous as hell.
If you're a tourist and you've done your due diligence with the usual research beforehand and you're not indulging in stupid activities then it's a safe as anywhere else else in Central America.
It's all up to you.
Cheers,
Terry
Terry, the question is a completely valid one, given the constant news of strife in Mexico. There has been collateral damage in the drug trade. It's a concern.
But Terry is right. If you've done your due dilligence, and stick to major routes, you should be fine. The south, for instance, seems pretty mellow. Watch what the locals do, as far as where people are going, and stick with that.
That said: Taking a bus through CA to the US is a waste of your time and effort. If your entire point is to say you saw some of the countryside through the window of your bus, it's a vain effort. If you're hoping for stamps in your passport, you'll miss at least four due to an open border policy. If you think you'll catch local flavour when you stop, occasionally, there are better ways to do that, and the life a bus rider leads is not the life of the places you pass.
If you're doing this in fits and starts, and will get off in random places as they strike your fancy, then fine, it could be interesting. But if it's just an endurance test, I don't see the point.
Sorry, my Reply #7 was worded a little harsh, I'll blame it on all the mojitos last night.
It is accurate though, although Piecar was much more eloquent.
Cheers,
Terry
