American Road Trip

We are three friends from Portugal looking forward to do a Road Trip in USA.
As we know almost anything about the best spots to eat, sleep etc, we need
your help! Please help us by giving your opinion about wonderful places to visit,
and cheap/good places to eat and sleep.

Some of the best road trips in the USA are the following:

(1) Hwy 1 from Monterey, CA to Cambria, CA (first get on the 17 mile drive, then stop at Carmel, CA and then at Hearst Castle along the way) It is not a long distance, but you can only average about 30 miles per hour for the distance of the drive. Very scenic and worth the drive, though. Featured in almost every car commercial you've ever seen.

(2) Natchez Trace Parkway between New Orleans, Lousiana and approximately Birmingham, Alabama

(3) Shenandoah Parkway through Shenandoah National Park

(4) Drive from Miami, Florida to Key West, Florida;

(5) "Going to the Sun" Road through Glacier National Park

(6) In the autumn, the drive from southwest Vermont through to southeast part of New Hampshire;

and lastly, my favorite:

(7) the drive from Sedona, Arizona to Williams, Arizona (or to nearby Flagstaff, Arizona), then past the Grand Canyon, then north to Page, Arizona, over to the south end of Lake Powell, then back southeast for a ways then north through Monument Valley (US 163) all the way to Moab, Utah (note: this drive is over five hundred miles long and takes well over 9 hours to make--and the only places along the whole distance to get gas is either at the Grand Canyon or in Page, Arizona) (Key highlights on this last drive are the red rocks of Sedona, the gigantic mountain north of Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, the gigantic cliffs and vistas of the south end of Lake Powell, the slot canyons near Page, the "Mittens" and "artist's point" at Monument Valley, and Arches National Park and Dead Horse Point near Moab).

Forgot to mention:

If you plan to visit the slot canyons near Page, such as Buckskin Gulch (the world's largest), you need to book ahead and to pay a $5 fee per day per person (and per dog).

Apply for permits (at least 3 months in advance) at:
http://www.blm.gov/az/st/en/arolrsmain/paria/coyote_buttes/permits.html

Since they limit the number of people to only 20 per day!!!, you need to apply well in advance and sometime go through a lottery system to be chosen to get a permit.

Good luck!
