Best time to go is December to April. Earlier is better as it literally gets hotter month by month.
Lots of cheap places to stay: hostelbookers, asiarooms, etc, but book early. Living comfortably is having air conditioning.
Buses, trains, budget flights for getting around.
Entry by flight gives you 30 days visa free in Thailand. You can get a 2 month visa from a Thai embassy abroad, then extend it for a third month while in Thailand for 1,900 baht.
Alternatively you can fly out on a budget flight (AirAsia) and come back for another 30 days visa free. Overland you get just 15 days visa free.

It doesnt really have to be budget, i mean i can take a good bit of money with me so i guess what im looking for is a bit of luxury for a few months.

It's really cheap in Thailand so you will definitely be able to have a fair bit of luxury. I was on a tight budget but I managed to have lots of massages while I was there, which was fantastic! I headed up north because there were less travellers than in the south, apart from Chiang Mai. If you like cooking, Chiang Mai is a great place for cookery lessons and learning thai massage as well. What sort of cultural experience are you looking for? Are you sure you want to spend 3-4 weeks in Bangkok? It's nice but very busy. There is a Tesco's there so that should make you feel at home! I was shocked to find one in Asia.
I love Thai food so would love to learn a bit more about that, as well as visiting the temples and general sightseeing.
I have heard it get really busy in Bangkok so i would only stay up to a maximum of 4 weeks there but if i managed to plan things a bit better i wouldn't stay as long.

Great, you will love Chiang Mai then. You get to go to the local markets before you cook as a group. It's great fun. I was vegetarian and they were able to accommodate that without any problem. You can travel around by train and bus, which is cheap. The overnight train is really comfortable. I was a budget traveller and I managed without any problem. It's more expensive in the South but it's still cheap compared to the UK.
There are so many temples that you might get 'templed-out' after a while. I did! You could look at staying in a monastery, if that's something you're interested in.
What sort of budget advice are you looking for - a daily amount? It really depends on where you stay, what you do etc. If you're concerned then get some rough prices for things you want to do, transport and places you might like to stay at to get a rough monthly or weekly figure. I had a set budget for my RTW trip. I knew I had to stick within that and it helped a lot. It kept me focused so I didn't blow it all at the start.
How did you feel with the language side of things? did most people understand you? I plan on learning a bit before i go away!
I want to travel and see some sights and things during the day but at night i will probably be partying or doing other stuff seeing as i am only 21
English is widely spoken in Thailand, but they will definitely appreciate any efforts you make to learn Thai. I only learned "hello" and "thank you" and even that little bit went a long way.
Im going to try my best to learn as much as possible, like you said it goes a long way
If someone has been away for 3 months or so can they let me know what they budgeted?

Im exactly the same as you, planning a trip next summer for 2-3 months, just started planning and looking at budgets and the best backpacking routes to meet other travellers, seems to me you can live quite well in Thailand on the cheap
