South/central america

Hi all,

Mexico is dangerous because of the drug wars there. Colombia might still be dangerous in a few areas. Venezuela has some bad areas, notably Caracas. Apart from that, your only real trouble will be pick pockets which are endemic in CA and SA.

Peru probably has most to see in SA. Travelling is fairly expensive so the more you travel, the more it will cost. You can spend endless hours on buses. Flights are much more expensive generally, and more so if booked late.

Accommodation and food are fairly cheap so if you stay in one area for some time with occasional day trips it won't cost too much.

I would start in Peru, see all I want to see there and decide what I wanted to do after that.

How much money? As much as possible. All in, I would like £2,000 a month though some I am sure could make it on half that.

Get some idea of exactly what you want then come back here and ask some specific questions.

Thanks for that, I'll take that into consideration

Mexico is not in any way dangerous nor is Colombia-this is the same lying tripe posted by the same ignoramus over & over & over again.

Ditto Sam... there are small areas in almost all countries that a foreign tourist has absolutely no business being, but with minimal research and common sense anyone can easily avoid these spots.

Colombia is by far my favourite country in South America right now and it offers an absolutely wealth of travel opportunities.

Cheers,
Terry

SamSalmon. Can I take it that you do not read newspapers so do not know about headless bodies hanging from bridges, the people slaughtered in gun fights, in today's newspaper seven girls gang raped on the outskirts of Mexico City and so on?

Official figures from the BBC say 13,000 people were murdered in drug killings in Mexico in the first 9 months of last year.

That is not counting non drug related killings.

I believed Mexico was safe but several years ago I had an old lady in a market in Mexico City stab me with a pair of scissors. I pushed her away and she fell over. Next moment I had a mob attack me. All I had done was defend myself from an unprovoked attack.

I had travelled all round Mexico three times and thought it safe because I was not attacked before.

Why the small Zona Rosa in Mexico City where tourists are considered safe? I found out.

So the ignoramus here would be you. Go read a newspaper.

Cyberia, with all due respect you're trying to paint with a very, VERY wide brush.

Of course Mexico has a horrible drug war going on right now but the violence is restricted to fairly small areas where a tourist has absolutely no business being. Use common sense and stay out of those areas, no big deal.

And don't trumpet your single anecdote as real data. One weird/scary thing can happen almost anywhere, but don't try to paint the entire country as being chock-full of scissor wielding psychos just because you ran into one old lady nutcase and few excitable locals.

And your constantly mentioning Colombia as dangerous as just plain wrong. I have to watch my back way more in MANY places in Central/South America than I have to in most places in Colombia.

Tranquilo.

Cheers,
Terry
