Have you essentially already half made up your mind that you want to go by car, and you're just looking for verification that the price isn't going to be way more than a bus or train? It'll be hard to give you that, as there are a lot of things that can go wrong with a car that end up costing you money, whereas by bus/train you have the benefit of a fixed price. On the other hand, I've heard of quite a few people buying cars in the US and driving them and loving the experience. It's a GREAT country to drive in, so as much as I'd like to recommend the train, personally my view is that the States is best done in a car, especially if travelling for 3 months. And compared to Norway, cars are dirt cheap, plus they are (nearly) all automatics
I'm going to be doing the same thing but in April next year.
Thankfully my trusty boyfriend is very good with fixing cars if they go wrong but we're both a bit unsure about what happens with insurance. If it's anything like the uk then you need to have a permenent address to get car insurance which is obviously not ideal. we're both very worried about not having insurance over there so would rather get it and from someone reliable as we both think getting around by car is going to be so much better.
whilst we're on the subject, does anyone know how easy it is to take a car across the border into Mexico? I've heard it could be a very bad move as theres a lot of gang related crime along the border but unsure. if someone can advise that would be awesome. ta! x
