Hawaii Feb - help needed

Hi All

Hi J

Hawaii in Jan/Feb can be a bit wild n stormy but you'll still feel a thousand miles from the gloom of English winter. It's the big surf season and the swells on the north shore are pumping! So if you're a gun surfer, you're in luck! For the rest of us, head to an outer island and soak up the relaxed feel. I've found that the mornings are usually beautifully sunny and warm and then around lunch time the clouds come drifting down from the mountains so you want to do your beach visits in the morning. My favourite Hawaiian island is Kauai because it is still "old time" Hawaii. Head up to Hanalei for wonderful local feel, beaches, taro fields, rainbows, dolphins. It's totally stunning.

Accommdation options - try and find a local B&B. The longer you stay, the better the rate they give you. If you're really on a budget, I've had friends who've done the whole of Hawaii in campgrounds. They have amazing campgrounds right on the waters edge.

It's so worth hiring a cheap car but if that's not an option, The Bus is cheap and an easy way to get around.

Have fun!

Marie

Ah the trip that never was. Had the same plan—Hawaii, February, cheap flights.

While researching I discovered most of the hotel prices are quite ridiculous, although there were a limited number of hostels with private rooms that were reasonable.

I was also advised to get away from the crowds on Oahu and head to the Big Island; it is more beautiful, stunning landscape, and less people.

Good luck. Hope you have a great time!

What's your budget, age and interests? Hawaii has a little of everything. Most favorite spot has to be Hana, Maui, but Oahu is also pretty awesome (best Chinese food in America).

best surfing on Oahu
best golf on Hawaii (Big Island)
most beautiful is Kauai (gets the most rain)
most traffic on Oahu
active volcanoes on Hawaii (Big Island)

Hawaii is where all the US people that live in the northern states (Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota, Pennsylvania) or the Midwest (Nebraska, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas) escape to in the month of February (either that or the Caribbean), which is why rates are at their highest then.

P.S. I'm partial to Maui, but my wife's favorite is Kauai--but then neither of us have been to the big island yet.

Thanks ever so much for all the advice - we are 30, moderate budget and love fishing! I notice that boats can be chartered for MArlin fishing (never been but has always been a dream).

The advice you have all given is invaluable - much appreciated. We have noticed an increase in prices at that time of year, but cant wait to get over there.

All the best
