You MUST carry your passport in Thailand (and not a copy). You might end up in jail if you do not.
Money belts are usually OK. Beware of pick pockets in Bangkok, and maybe elsewhere.

What I would do, is get a photocopy of my passport and carry that with me, along with my stamped immigration card.
- Technically* it doesn't conform with the law, but I wouldn't like to risk losing/having my passport stolen.
In Vietnam your hostel or guesthouse holds your passport during your stay.

I have been to Tland at least 10 separate times and don not carry my passport at all times. I also make a copy of the info page and laminate that. Copy of your stamped Immigration page. That will satisfy the Thai Police if stopped. They will take you to your hotel if they really need your passport. I had my motorbike (MB) impounded once in Pattaya. Baht bus to Police Station to recover it. I did not have enough (500 baht) on me. The Policeman put me on the back of his MB and took me to my hotel. Showed him my passport, got 500 baht, back, paid the fine, got my MB out of impound. Expensive lesson, but got to visit the Pattaya Police Station!
Yes, many hostels, GH have lockers, bring a padlock. I suggest you buy an
pouch if you don't have one. Buy it your first day in BKK on Khao San Road. You might look at as well. Let's face it, cheap rooms are not safe. This way you can leave you backpack and not worry that things will go missing while out during the day. Also handy on buses, boats. Very easy to go thru BPs when they are out of sight.
My other suggestion is to use the gov't bus system. The Thai people do, you should as well. All the travel shops will book you on the private buses to Chiang Mai, Krabi, etc. Many of of the buses, very few on the gov't buses. Yes, you do have to get yourself over to the bus station. Not as convenient as using the travel shop buses, but safer. Worth the effort IMO. Good luck with your time in Tland.

Thanks to everyone for the replies, I didn’t realise you needed proof of ID on you at all times. I’ll make a photo copy to take with me, when I’m out of a night time then! I like the look of that pac safe aswell, cheers Mike!
I took a pac safe and locked my ruccy up at all times. Over kill some said but I never lost anything. I also took a pacsafe money belt to carry passport etc around. Sometimes it got cumbersome but still safe.
Carrying enough cash around for your whole trip is a dilemma if there is not a safe available. Make use of banks and cash machines.
Thanks Esox, i wasn't planning on taking all my money in cash so will take my debit and credit for emergencies.
I can see where people are coming from with the over kill comment, but if you didnt lose anyting.. Who cares!
I have been to Thailand several times and never carried my passport around with me, nor was I ever stopped and asked for id.
well I remember very well that I never carried my passport and its copy ever...I hv taken a scooter on rent in phuket and in the night there was a barricading towards Nai Harn Beach and we were stopped and frisked by the Thai Police since we weren't wearing our helmets... they checked us and asked us to wear our helmets in sign language and they let us go...
The Thai Chief was looking too dangerous and I still get shiver when I recall that moment...
