Can anyone suggest a good middle town/city to stay in Borneo? I'd like to focus on Malaysia Borneo, see the Orangs. Is that even possible or will I be better off traveling place to place?
It depends on what else you want to see in Borneo. There's the Sepilok sanctuary just outside Sandakan but, if you want to see orang utans in the wild, we had a great experience on the Kinabatangan river at the Nature Lodgehttp://www.naturelodgekinabatangan.com/index.php three days two nightsand plenty of river trips. Hornbills, monkeys, monitors, orangs (including a pair holding hands!), kingfishers and lots more. We missed the pigmy elephants but they can be seen sometimes.
Travel is fairly cheap in Borneo so we moved around. We saw snakes. langur monkeys, proboscis monkeys, scorpions and others in Bako NP just outside Kuching, snakes, insects, monkeys and a moonrat in Mulu MP and we climbed Mt Kinabalu too.
Snorkelling with turtles is also an option on the east coast near Sandakan too.
