Hi Gem, I'm planning on doing exactly the same thing! Planning on going December/January Got my WHV already so now just need to decide a date and book it - absolutely terrified! I haven't travelled on my own before either so have been desperately looking for people who are going to be in Melbourne so I'm not completely on my own.
Having travelled before (with friends) you really don't need an agency to sort out your travels - it just adds to the expense. You can easily sort it out yourself, it just takes a bit more time and effort on your part!

Hi Guys, I am already booked up, but I think I may have to change my dates to flying out 27th Jan 2014 > Melbourne. I also am a solo traveller and very nervous. Would be sooo nice to make some friends before then and meet up in the big blue.

Hi, i am going to melbourne on jan 2nd on my own. Its possible my friend might join me but im planning it as though shes not...just incase!!
Im planning on getting a RSA (responsible serving of alcohol lisense) so i can work in a bar.
I have my flight to singapore so far, will be booking my flight to Melbourne next month as they have promo flights coming out.
Ive sent out a shit load of emails for work and will be sending more before i go, also going to look into agencies that deal with bar work and the like.
Im deffo up for meeting a few people and sharing a dorm, safer and cheaper!!!! Then we can explore the city together!

HanBan13 – I’m considering using BUNAC (http://www.bunac.org/uk/work-abroad/work-australia/essentials) or emailing everyone like lizziemary or just seeing what happens out there!? I would feel more reassured having something in place before going tho! What kind of thing are you looking for? Also do you mean you’re leaving for Australia next year?
Kate2390 – Great work getting your WHV! I still need to get mine but I don’t see it being a problem and hear you can get it quite quickly? Have you made any progress on dates? The earliest I can leave is Jan. I desperately want to travel and meet up with people too as it’s going to be my first travelling on my own and we will be going the other side of the world! Thanks for your advice on using an agency. It’s more for the job help than the other stuff. I want a travel buddy! Also Lizziemary mentioned promo flights!
Gilly1 – I’m looking at going between end of Jan –mid Feb so you’re dates fit in with me! I should be flexible too. When do you think you might know if you’re changing your flight details?
Lizziemary-unfortunately I don’t see myself flying out that early (more end of jan). How easy is it to get an RSA? Does it have to be an Austrian one or can you get one for anywhere? How is the job hunting going? Sharing a dorm would be perfect if possible! How long do you think you’ll stay in the dorm? I haven’t got a clue about where to look for more permanent accommodation but I guess that will depend on work! Good point about a door being safer not just cheaper! It would be great to explore the city with you! What are these promo flights you mention?!!!?!

To be honest it was my friend who has been before who told me about the RSA, but i had a look onlione and quite alot of places offer it, like job agencies. Its seems to me to be an online test that can take a few hours...if you pass, you get the certificate sent out to you, now im yet to discover wether i have to be in aus already for that but i will find out.
I guess, staying in a hostel would work for a while till say us to becamse comfortable with eachother for example and both had a permanat job, then we could look for accomodation.
I am wanting to go to asia at some piont aswell, wether it is after a whole 12 months in oz, or somewhere in between, will have to just take each day as it comes.
the promo flights are on air asia. i have my flight from london to singapore with quantas which i found on skyscanner, and my friend is keeping her eye out on the promos, which come up in october...they will be about £150, sp pretty good.

I'm flying into Melbourne on the 2nd January '14! Staying for the month to travel some of the east coast. I'm travelling on my own, anyone else have similar plans?

We can sort something out, i would like to travel the eastcoast aswell, but i need to find away of getting funds along the way x
It would be great. Are you going over on a WHV? How long do you plan on staying for? I just have an e-visitor visa so no working for me but I wouldn't hesitate on getting the WHV if some good job prospects came along! x
