As above I am planning on travelling from Adelaide to Melbourne with a car via the Great Ocean Road. Has anyone done this journey? My plan is to travel to Adelaide at the end of January. Ideally I want to spend around 3/4 days in the centre and hire a car and make my way to Melbourne. I plan to visit Kangaroo Island, also. Firstly, would you travel to here whilst based in Adelaide or en-route with the car?
The stretch between Adelaide and Peterborough (the western end of the "shipwreck coast") doesn't have that much spectacular coastline. When I did this last January, we stopped at Port Elliot for a few days (very much recommended; lovely YHA, good beach with great swimming in Horseshoe Bay, nice hiking), then made a beeline for the Grampians (good hiking, and relatively accessible aboriginal sites, plus a quite impressive aboriginal cultural center at Hall's Gap), and after a few days there, headed south toward the actual great ocean road.
The stretch of road between Peterborough and Princetown has a worthwhile stop every other kilometer or so. Really, every brown sign is worth pulling over for. You can just about see them all (thoroughly) in a rather full day (including hiking down to the beach at each stop which allows that). The twelve apostles at sunset or sunrise is kinda annoying to fit into that (mostly with needing accommodation 'nearby'), but worth it. Further east, I'm quite fond of Apollo Bay as a place to stay overnight (good YHA again). Be sure not to miss the koalas on the road to the Cape Otway lighthouse (watch for completely bare trees; that's where they are). Also the Mait's Rest boardwalk (ten minutes west of Apollo Bay) is a very nice short loop track through some incredible rainforest. Apollo Bay to Torquay mostly seems to be about the beaches. Lovely stretch to drive, but I'm not that much of a beach person, so cared less for that part.
