Travelling Vietnam over July and August

Starting my first big adventure this summer and need a little insight and advice on what to do and where to go.

Hi - it's difficult to comment on this like this as it depends on where your interests lie. I've made a broad and rough suggestion to fit with the time you have available but agree with jojo that you could make life more pleasant if you cut out one or more of the beach places. Then you could spend an extra day in Hanoi, Ha Long, HCMC or Hue, But as I say, it depends what type of holiday you're looking for.

1) Hanoi-> Ha Long Bay - Days 1 - 2 in Hanoi, 3 - 4 Ha Long, evening catch a train to Sapa
2) Day 5-7 or 8 in Sapa for trekking and back hanoi
3. Hanoi-> Hue - overnight train then day 8 (just time to see some of the temples and pagodas, an extra day would be better to get over the train journey but with the time you have one day could do it)
4. Hue-> Hoi An - morning bus then days 9-12
5. Hoi An-> Nha Trang - overnight train (from Danang) then days 13-15
6. NhaTrang -> Mui Ne - bus from Nha Trang, days 16-18
7. Mui Ne-> Ho Chi Minh City - afternoon bus or train (better) on day 19 then days 20 - 22 (time for Cu Chi tunnel and a one day trip to the Mekong if you want to but an extra day better if possible)
8. Ho ChiMinh – Phu Quoc island - flight from Saigon, or can get speed boat from one city of Mekong Delta

Long distance bus travel in Vietnam can be quite dangerous - I advise using more trains and domestic air. I would also suggest that you should not have a set schedule as outlined above - better to just wing it and come and go with the places that appeal to you. Summer will be pretty hot and wet - better prepare for it. It's a great country and here's another hint - book the free student tours of Hanoikids and Saigonhotpot done in exchange for English practice. (You pay for lunch and any taxi used) Send both groups an email about a month prior to travel:

I found the best way to explore was to hire a moped if I was in a particular town for a couple of days. I believe it was $5 a day to hire the bike and about $3 to fill her up with fuel, which usually lasted about a day.

Thanks everyone.

My plans have increased slightly, going to shanghai for a couple of days, then on to ho chi minh. Want to the then perhaps go to Cambodia, and then on to Hoi an and Hue. From there up to Hanoi, Ha long bay and then Sapa. For the the final part am then going to Hong Kong for a couple of days.

any recommendations greatly appreciate. have some hostels booked up for my initial stops, also booked on a tour with Saigon Hotpot (thanks for the tip).

Cheers
Paul

hi there,
In Viet Nam I would like to suggest some beaches cause this time is summer. you can drop by Vung Tau, Mui Ne if you dont have time to Phu Quoc island. then you can go Son Tra in Da Nang, Ly Son Island (quite near)
in the north Of Viet Nam, you can join some tours in new destinations such as Co To island (more beautiful and peaceful than Cat Ba) and the mountainous areas namely Ha Giang, Ba Be lake, Mai Chau plateau...
you can easily search tours of some travel operators such as -snip- for your reference.
hope you enjoy!
